Born in Munich in 1903, he died in Kaunas in 1990. He completed his studies at the Kaunas Art School in 1929, and at the Higher Industrial Art Institute in Monza in Italy in 1935. He taught at the Kaunas Art School from 1935, and at the Kaunas Applied Art Institute in 1940. He joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Union in 1946. Kalpokas’ oeuvre includes paintings, posters, book illustrations and book design. He illustrated children’s books from the end of the 1930s until the beginning of the 1950s, and is considered to be a pioneer in modern children’s book illustration.
