Gintarė Adomaitytė (b. 1957 in Kaunas) is a prose writer, playwright and essayist. She graduated from Vilnius University with a degree in journalism and has worked on numerous publications. She has been an independent writer since 1999. Adomaitytė writes prose for children and adults, screenplays for documentary and art films, and radio plays. She publishes her essays in cultural weeklies and magazines, such as Šiaurės Atėnai (Northern Athens), Gimtasis žodis (Native Word), and others.

Adomaitytė is a member of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union as well as IBBY. She is a three-time recipient of the Lithuanian Section IBBY prize for best book for young readers – in 2001 for The House of Dragonflies, her book for young adults, in 2003 for her children’s book Tales from the City of Winds and in 2006 for Belle Époque Children, her book about children writers who lived during the late 19th and the first part of the 20th century. In 2007 The Merry-Go-Round made it to the five top children’s books. In 2003 the writer received Vytautas Tamulaitis Prize for the manuscripts of tales. In 2005, the Vaižgantas Award marked her book on the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis. In 2008, she was granted the Children’s Literature Award of the Lithuanian Education and Science Ministry.

Adomaitytė lives in Vilnius and Ignalina.
