Violeta Palčinskaitė (b. 1943 in Kaunas, Lithuania) is a poet, play-right and translator. From 1960 to 1964 she studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of Vilnius University.
She started writing poetry for adults in 1958 and made her debut in children’s literature in 1965. She is a member of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union since 1964. She has published around 25 books for the little readers – poems, plays and fairytales. Her plays-tales have been staged by several Lithuanian theatres, as well as the theatres in Moscow, Kiev, Lvov, Minsk, Tbilisi and Helsinki.
Her translations from the English language include works by the world’s celebrated writers Roald Dahl, Lemony Snicket, Kate Di Camillo, Jacqueline Wilson as well as pieces of the British children’s folklore.
In 1978 the writer was awarded the Lithuanian State Prize for the book Home Sweet Home. Her collection of poems Dolls of the Old Town was on the IBBY Honour List of 1988. In 2009 Palčinskaitė was decorated with the Gold Medal of the World Intellectual Property Organization for her outstanding achievement in children’s literature and poetry.
